Gauge & Usage

Gauge refers to the thickness of jewelry wire. The measurements are counter-intuitive because the smaller the number, the thicker the wire and vice-versa. The thicker wires are often used to create specific shapes or the bases of jewelry, while the thinner wires are used for wrapping.
In the chart below, the gauge is listed to the left followed by the actual size of diameter in millimeters and inches. You can refer to the following recommended usage and choose according to your own needs.

28 0.320 0.013
26 0.406 0.016 Easy to manipulat, these 2 gauges are great for wire wrapping beads with small to medium sized holes. They are usually used for intricate wirework.
24 0.508 0.020
22 0.635 0.025 Medium-gauge wires, good for making jewelry findings, such as ear wires, eye pins, jump rings, etc. They can also be used for stone settings.

Customer Questions

  • Ask a Question
  • QDo gemstone beads require any special care to prevent fading?

    By mith*****Smith

AGemstone beads need special care to prevent fading. Avoid contact with chemicals like bleach, ammonia, perfume, and those in lotions/creams. Protect from sunlight and UV light; store in a dark/shaded place when not worn. Also, be cautious of extreme temperature changes as they can affect gemstone stability. A room-temperature, 40%-60% humidity environment is suitable for most.

  • QWhich gemstone beads are best for jewelry making?

    By nnian*****Tannian

    2024-12-16 19:36:52.84

AThe choice of the best gemstone beads for jewelry making depends on various factors such as the type of jewelry, the desired aesthetic, durability, and budget.

Durability: Opt for quartz varieties such as amethyst and citrine (Mohs 7) or garnet (6.5 - 7.5) for long - lasting pieces.

Aesthetic Appeal: Lapis lazuli offers a rich blue with gold flecks, and moonstone has a unique glow for an eye - catching look.

Budget-Friendly: Agate beads have diverse colors and patterns. Howlite is often dyed to resemble costly gemstones like turquoise. Both of them have affordable prices.

Symbolic Value: Jade and turquoise both culturally significant, add meaning but require different care levels.

  • QWhat's the difference between gemstone beads and glass beads?

    By uest*****wuest

    2024-12-16 22:26:52.147

AGemstone beads are natural minerals formed through geological processes in the earth's crust over a long time. Their composition is determined by nature and they can have inclusions. They vary in hardness and possess unique optical characteristics. Their value depends on factors like rarity, quality, and demand and they're often used in durable, high-end jewelry. In contrast, glass beads are man-made from materials like silica, soda ash, and limestone. They have a smooth, even appearance, usually without inclusions. They're generally softer and more easily shaped into complex designs.
